The Nation

The Nation, founded on July 6, 1865, is a liberal periodical devoted to politics and culture and ist is the oldest continuously published weekly magazine in the United States. It has departments covering Architecture, Art, Corporations, Defense, Environment, Films, Legal Affairs, Music, Peace and Disarmament, Poetry, and the United Nations.

The circulation of The Nation is rising and was last placed at 184,296 (2004), more than double the neoliberal The New Republic.

The Nation magazine has lost money in all but three or four years of operation and is sustained in part by a group of more than 25,000 donors called The Nation Associates who donate funds to the periodical above and beyond their annual subscription fees.

I.F. Stone and The Nation
by Dinelle Lucchesi

In 1932, I.F. Stone wrote for The Nation for the first time. In "The Romans Would Understand" he introduced himself to the magazine with an unusual question: "Why do the Nazis engage in conflict with German Protestantism? They could easily avoid it."

By 1940, Stone was the magazine's Washington Editor and by 1943 Stone was himself the target of constant FBI surveillance after his castigating scoop exposed secret FBI guidelines for singling out subversives among government workers. The article was scathing and an embarrassment for the agency. The editor publicly defended her choice to allow Stone's source to remain anonymous even to her. The piece generated readers' thanks and praise for printing such a bold and honest indictment of the United States government. However, Freda Kirchwey, The Nation's same editor, later fired Stone in 1946 from his Washington post after he failed to notify her he had signed with the leftist New York City daily PM to be the first journalist to travel with the Jewish underground to Palestine.

Stone's FBI expose caused a sensation, and lasting enmity from J. Edgar Hoover, when Stone revealed the FBI director's racist and anti-semitic feelings in the kind of questions asked about civil servants: "does he mix with Negroes? Does he...have too many Jewish friends? Does he think the colored races are as good as the white? Why do you suppose he has hired so many Jews?." And, hilariously given the time, when Vichy France was a Nazi puppet regime, "Is he always criticizing Vichy France?" In Izzy's column he noted "questions like these are being used as a sieve to strain anti-fascists and liberals out of the government. They serve no other purpose." [All Governments Lie: p 192-193]

A few decades passed and Stone once again found time to contribute to The Nation. In the mid-eighties he began "Izzy Says," a weekly paragraph where the great leftist luminary, well, said something. The logo: a caricature of a ready-for-war Stone wielding a life-size pen. After a few weeks Stone apologetically called the feature off, citing his inability to refrain from obsessively combing through documents to enrich each story.

Over fifty years after Stone's first byline appeared in the magazine, Victor Navasky paid tribute to Stone in a July, 2003 profile piece in which he praised Izzy's tenacious writing and thorough research methods as inspiration to generations of future muckrakers, ensuring his legacy will contribute to The Nation's pages for years to come. Navasky wrote, 'It's the way he was right, the way he lived his life, the way he did his journalism that magnified his influence, made him something of a role model for the most idealistic of the next generation.
